The guilty plea came on the same day that jury selection in Gretz's murder
trial was set to begin -- and with the prosecution poised to present DNA
evidence that Gretz's defense attorney had unsuccessfully sought to have
thrown out.
The 33-year-old Minneapolis man originally had cast himself as the grieving
husband who was as much a victim, a role he played to the hilt during a
candlelight vigil after his wife's death.
Then, the evidence mounted. Two months later, he was charged with murder.
Gretz entered his plea Monday as part of a deal his attorney and prosecutors
had spent the past two weeks negotiating.
