In the old days (when I merely lurked), many true-crime writers would
post, and those posters who weren't true-crime authors were
nonetheless intelligent and interesting. I emailed Jack Olsen and Ann
Rule with intelligent questions and got intelligent responses.

Like Republican Rome, the place gradually fell apart and the
barbarians took over. I jump in once and a while just to troll the
bastards, like a guerilla waging a guerilla war on the capturing army.


Whatever you do, don't consider contributing anything positive. Just
continue either to lurk or whine. That oughta improve the group.


The group cannot improve as long as it is dominated by the circle of
overly assertive jerks that has taken it over. It is a fallacy to
think the group can be improved by me or someone else posting more
on-topic stuff. We will still be drowned out by the attention-seekers
and socializers and noise-makers. The only solution is for some of
those people to shut up and stop posting, and of course, that will
never happen since it is contrary to their very beings to not assert
themselves mindlessly, loudly and frequently.

Actually, you're wrong. In an
unmoderated newsgroup, the onus is on each poster to conform the group
to their personal group by whatever means.

In the big bad real world, what the poster posts is the fault of the
poster. I may choose not to read it, I may even choose to killfile
the poster or the subject, but it is still the fault of the poster for
posting something stupid.

This can include adroit use
of killfiles, "Mark Read", and, yes, posting what interests you. Or any
other strategy, except whining and peer pressure.

Peer pressure is unacceptable, but "whining," as you call it, is
merely pointing out that the emperor has no clothes, which is the
emperor's fault, and anyone's right to point out. You want to come in
and turn something good into a suckfest of idiotic small talk and
trivial self-assertion, then you're going to be called on it. At that
point, your kind will inevitably accuse your accuser of "whining."
Such a familiar pattern.

That just causes
entrenchment.

Entrenchment is a behavior seen in irrational people. Nothing causes
it so much as their own lack of intellectual and moral standards, nor
must I or anyone else accomodate their intellectual and moral
laziness. If they choose to screw up, so be it, and it is their
fault.

To expect other users to make the group conform to your
idea is not only impossible, but foolhardy.

Hence, I am not doing it. As I said, it "will never happen."

But the question remains, why do you people insist on taking over
alt.true-crime for your piddly small talk and 6th-grade socializing
behaviors? You could invent your own newsgroup --
alt.small-talk-for-peabrains or alt.wish-high-school-wasnt-over. But
no, for some curious psychological reason, you must always try to take
over something bigger and better. Is it to drag something better
down to your level, or to give a more grandiose sheen to what is
essentially just your meaningless chit-chat?


I do believe you used to post these complaints "whay back when" also. It also seems to me you are doing exactly what you are protesting.
