We're just now hearing about all of the physical problems the ones in
captivity had. I'm not sure they _were_ strong enough to overpower him.
Plus, you are completely underestimating how someone abused (or
mistreated)
for a very, very long time (their entire lives, for the children) acts and
reacts towards their abuser. You have probably never been in even a
remotely
similar situation yourself, but that kind of conditioning has a profound
effect on behavior -- and ability to fight back (whether physically or
psychologically).

Add to that, his constant
trips downstairs with food. <<

I really smell a rat here. Somebody
is lying about everything. No way he could have done that
every day, 365 days a year, for 24 years, and not been
caught by his "upstairs" family. <<

I was suspicious of them, too, but now I think it's not the upstairs
family
who should have smelled a rat: at least one article mentions that his
upstairs family lived on the third floor of the apartment building,
placing
them solidly four stories above this dungeon. It's the people on the
ground
floor who were probably looking the other way while weird *** went on
right
below their feet.

I think all of them knew
about it. I can only imagine they were so stupid, he had
managed to convince them of something about his captives
... like they were retarded and dangerous, and he would
go to prison if anybody told ... and they would lose their
home, and live in shame. Think about it .. she had 7
babies ... screaming at the top of her voice during birth
... and nobody heard a thing ???? No way. <<

first floor who knew/heard something.

No, I don't think so. It sounds like classic abuse. If that's all the
boys
knew, if their whole life was lived in that basement, I'm not at all
surprised they remained docile and compliant.

Boys by nature aren't raised like veals in small underground tunnels.
Nothing about these children is going to be remotely normal. This isn't
at
all surprising. We're not talking about a slightly overly-authoritarian
father figure; we're talking about _captive in a basement for their entire
lives_. Never having seen the sun. Or the moon. or rain. Or snow. Or
talked to anyone else but the mother. Even with a tv, they've said that
the
children don't have much in the way of verbal skills. It's a fair bet
that
the monster didn't have a Direct TV package or FiOS for them down there.
It
may have been a handful of local broadcast channels. That was their
entire
window on the world. So these kids are _not_ going to be normal, or
behave
normally, or have normal reactions.

Again, you are judging them by the standards of _normal_ children, raised
in
a relatively normal environment. They are not. If they have never left
the
basement, if they were trained from birth that the basement is their
world,
they probably would not have the normal, boyish rambunctiousness that
you're
describing. And while they may have wanted to leave, it probably wouldn't
be
even remotely the same emotion that you or I would have if, at our current
ages, we were locked in a basement for a number of years. There is _no_
frame of reference for these children, except the basement.

Besides that, there were two boys down there, one of them five years old.
One of them, what was it, 18, 19? A child who had never seen sunlight, was
anemic, lacked the natural source of vitamin D, and had a stooped stance
from living in such *short* quarters. It was said the eldest child had lost
all their teeth already. These *children* probably resemble concentration
camp survivors. They certainly are not fit, healthy, normal 18 yr. olds.
They received absolutely no medical care their entire lives, and were found
to have immune deficiencies. We aren't talking about NORMAL people in any
shape of the word. Let alone the emotional destruction of their psyches.
Just what do you think the *padded room* was for. They witnessed many rapes
of their mother, the birth of their siblings, and the disappearnce of three,
no four of their siblings, never to be seen again. One carried out of there
dead. They didn't know what happened to their two sisters and one brother
who was removed, never to be seen again.

By not a strict man, but an extreme authoritarian figure who beat and raped
their mother. A tyrant, who was capable of anything, yet who completely
controlled their world. And none of us has any idea what he told them. Or
what *punishment* he doled out for disobeying HIS rules. After all, their
own mother saw what *punishment* she got, she was imprisoned in an
underground bunker for gods sake. From what I read, only a portion of the
bunker was under the house, most of it was under the yard.
