Makes sense. Except ... the boys. They would have been able
to overpower him when he came down to "visit" his daughter.
You did read the part where if they'd have done that, they never
would've been able to get out? He had the thing closed with a code
only he knew. If they took him out, they wouldn't have been able to
open the door to get out anyway. They'd have all starved to death.
I'm pretty sure that's a powerful motivator for leaving gramps alone.
