Michigan Man Protests Losing His Son After Mistakenly Giving Him
Alcoholic Lemonade
Tuesday, April 29, 2008

DETROIT - A University of Michigan professor says he had no idea he'd
given his 7-year-old son alcoholic lemonade at a ball game, and is
furious at child-protection officials for removing his son from the home.

Christopher Ratte of Ann Arbor and his wife have filed a complaint
against Child Protective Services.

Their son Leo spent two days in state custody. The father spent nearly a
week outside his home before he was allowed to return.

He tells the Detroit Free Press that he'd taken his son to a Detroit
Tigers game a few weeks ago. He didn't notice the $7 lemonade he bought
contained alcohol.

A security guard noticed the boy drinking the spiked lemonade and called
authorities. Leo was checked at a hospital. No trace of alcohol was found
in his blood.

No charges were filed against the father, who says it was a case of
"massive overreaction."

This kind of *** really pisses me off. I'm remembering all the stories
posted on here of kids being left in obviously abusive homes because CPS
ignored the warning signs and the child ended up dead, sometimes after a
torturous life. And CPS is supposed to be understaffed and overworked,
blah blah. Grrrrr

I dunno. I can't believe the guy was so stupid as to not
know that "Mike's Hard Lemonade" had alcohol in it
(5%). The little stand-up cards are all over the mass-
market restaurants (Applebees, Chilis, etc)......and
it's in the grocery stores in the beer sections.

We make it necessary for CPS to investigate all reports....
and what if it had been the fifth one he'd let the kid drink?
No one knew, until the kid was tested.

I can understand CPS acting at first because there was a report and they had
to. Same thing with cops that answer stupid calls. But putting the kid in
state custody for "two" days? Then making the man live outside the home for
a week? How long did that friggin test take? Although I do have to admit
that even if he were a nondrinker and had no idea what Mike's Lemonade was,
the $7 tag on it should have set off a red flag. But still. <<

When's the last time you bought a soda at the movies? :-)

Besides that, I would occasionally give my daughter a sip of my wine when
they were around that age and older. And when my one daughter who had 9
months of severe colic, I dabbed my finger in whiskey and put it in her
mouth out of desperation (I begrudgingly gave in to an old wive's tale).
Crap, I should have posted that on Bill's thread about crimes we have dared
to admit. ;) <<

Kids usually get a sip of wine during a Passover seder, too. I mean, it's
Manischewitz (eeeew!), but still technically wine by some standards. <g>
