As mother and daughter pledged never to be separated again, Rosemarie,
67, sobbed in anguish: "I'm so sorry - I had no idea."

Mr Kepplinger said: "Even though they were all very distressed and
worried about meeting each other for the first time, the family came
together naturally. It was astonishing how easy it was. Felix was the
most distressed. Until this week, he'd never seen the light of day or
more than four people.

"He'd jump at the slightest disturbance and held on to his mother the
whole time. It's not surprising he was so scared.

"Everything the children know they learned either from their mother or
TV which was kept on almost non-stop day and night. The result is that
there are massive gaps in their knowledge."

Police told of the boys' reaction to the sights around them as they
were driven from their cellar home for a hospital check.

Chief Insp Leopold Etz, 50, said: "It was their first car ride. They
were amazed at the speed and really excited.

"Felix was beside himself with excitement. He shrieked with pleasure
when he saw cars coming the other way. He and Stefan kept bracing
themselves, thinking there was going to be a head-on crash.

"When we left the hospital with the boys it was dark, and they were
fascinated by the vehicles' headlights. They were shouting and hiding
behind the seats. Everything was new and amazing. But the best bit was
when they saw the moon.

"They were open-mouthed with awe, nudging each other and pointing.
I've seen a lot, but nothing like this."

Lisa, Monika and Alexander were separated by Josef from their mother
at birth, possibly because they were "cry babies" and their sobs would
have been heard coming from the cellar.
