The dungeon family's captivity was exposed when Kerstin became
critically ill and Elisabeth persuaded her cruel father to take her to
hospital.
Kerstin has renal failure, possibly brought on by her bizarre life
underground, and has been placed in an induced coma. Last night, the
teenager was still in intensive care.
Doctor Albert Reiter, who is treating her, said: "She's in a severely
life-threatening condition which we can't explain. Her immune system
may be hit. In addition to nearly 20 years underground with no
sunlight and 20 years of psychological stress come factors such as
infection.
"When Kerstin first came in to us, she was very pale, and bleeding
from her tongue due to convulsions. Fritzl told us she'd taken some
drugs for a headache, nothing more.
