Why couldn't the scum call the front desk to say he was about to kill

A Rockville man with a history of mental problems and custody disputes
is accused of drowning his three young children in the bathtub of a
Baltimore hotel room this weekend, Baltimore police said this morning.

Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III accused Mark Castillo,
41, of killing the children by submerging them "one at a time" in the
bathtub of a top-floor room at the Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor at
Camden Yards.

Castillo, who according to court records suffers from bipolar
disorder, was supposed to spend Saturday with 6-year-old Anthony, 4-
year-old Austin and 3-year-old Athena, then return them to their
mother in Silver Spring by the end of the day.

Amy A. Castillo, a 42-year-old pediatrician, called Montgomery County
police at 8:30 p.m. Saturday to say that her children had not been
returned to her house, in the 400 block of Waterford Road.

Shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday, Mark Castillo called the front desk of
the hotel to say he had killed his children and was about to kill
himself.

"We will be asking ourselves, 'Why? Why?' " said Baltimore Mayor
Shelia Dixon at a news conference this morning. It could not
immediately be learned this morning what steps Montgomery County
police took to locate the children once they were reported missing.

Bealefeld said Mark Castillo is under police supervision at a hospital
while receiving treatment for apparently self-inflicted, superficial
cuts to his neck. He will be charged in the deaths as soon as he is
released, Bealefeld said.

"This is just a horrible tragedy," said Joe Vanderwalde, who is Amy
Castillo's supervisor in the Kaiser Permanente system. "It is the
worst thing I've ever heard of."

Vanderwalde, pediatrics service chief for the Mid-Atlantic Kaiser
Permanente Medical Group, said the children's mother had "tried so
hard to do what she could for her children."

She tried to "keep them away" from Mark Castillo, Vanderwalde said.
But he said the father fought for custody.

In 2006, according to court records, Amy Castillo was granted
temporary sole custody on an emergency motion, but Mark Castillo was
granted visitation rights shortly afterward. At least twice last year,
motions that would have withheld visitation rights were denied. At one
point, according to the records, Amy Castillo was fined for refusing
visitation rights.

Arrggghh. What can you do when the courts refuse to recognize the danger? Just let them go, I guess.

Kathy

Another time, according to the records, a court ordered a mental
health examination for him.
