I don't claim that Winnicott endorsed the raising of children by
developmentally disabled people. I was suggesting that the concept of
good enough mothering allows for the possibility that a developmentally
disabled mother could have better success at child-rearing than could a
cognitively well-endowed crack addict. There's nothing even remotely
controversial about that idea.

Well, the woman in this story had a year old child who weighed 15 pounds.
Couldn't manage to extricate herself from a horrible situation for her
and her child. Hard to see how the crackhead could have done much worse.

But it's a false dilemma - I don't want either one raising children.
However, few serious crack addicts manage to carry a baby to full term.
When they test the blood and find it positive for cocaine, they take the
baby away.

But have an IQ that gives you the mind of a child? Hey, no problem.

Can you imagine the psychological outlook of, say, a 12 year old whose
mother is retarded? The embarrassment, the shame? Not to mention how
life works when the kid is easily able to outsmart the parent.

Not optimal; not criminal.

So it's only criminal actions that should cause a parent to lose custody? I
think most people would agree with that, but to me, it's wacky. Some people
aren't capable or competent. Homeless, for example. Suffering serious
mental illness. Debilitated by physical disease. Someone paralyzed from
the neck down can't care for a child, for example.

There's a guy in my city who is in a wheelchair (locals will recognize him,
he owns the Automatic Transmission Center and advertises on TV). I've seen
him out with a small child, probably about three, I assume the kid is his.
No other adult in sight. The kid goes running off in to the shrubbery at a
brunch place, and he can't get to the child, he has to ask the kid to come
back. Does this seem like an accident waiting to happen? You betcha.
