I was about to write this off as another example of your pathological resentment, but I checked the news and it appears the authorities are, indeed, considering whether to lay charges on this man. But I can't imagine what the charges would be.
I think there are several states in which a "failure to aid" (can't remember the full legal term) is a misdemeanor. It's possible that he felt helpless and followed her wishes to be left there, and for that I feel truly awful for him. Her own mental state notwithstanding, he himself would have to be compromised in some way to allow this -- whether through abuse, mental disorder or mental retardation. Whatever her problem is, I hope *he* receives help in some way. Unless there is a clear case of him abusing her (tying her or whatever the one theory is), I don't think they could get any charges against him that a compassionate court would uphold.
The stories I've read so far don't make it seem as if he's abused her. Quite the opposite, in fact. Abusers would have stayed at the scene and called for help, then remained there to make all sorts of statements about "the real story" (which seldom is the real story). An abuser would try to minimize the appearance of a crime by controlling whatever aspect of the investigation he could. This poor guy went to work then made the call. It seems to me he was trying to distance himself somewhat, most probably so he *could* make the call and not have to witness the rescue. That's generally in opposition to an abuser's MO.
I think it's possible that he and she were just the right combination of personalities/mental issues that fosters bizarre situations and detrimental behavior.
