Friends and authorities baffled by prominent couple's disappearance

Wealthy couple John and Elizabeth Calvert vanished on Monday, leaving behind their yacht, Mercedes, private plane and pet cat.

They seem to have simply vanished, shutting off their cell phones, missing important business meetings and abandoning their 2006 Mercedes-Benz and a private plane.

The disappearance of prominent couple John and Elizabeth Calvert has baffled investigators in Hilton Head Island, S.C., and gripped the upscale resort town.

"If you knew John and Liz, it just doesn't fit," Mark Leinmiller, a college friend, told the Hilton Head Island Packet. "It's not like a 'Thelma and Louise' kind of thing where they just disappear."

John Calvert, 47, who manages a yacht club and other businesses, and his 45-year-old wife, an attorney, were last seen at a meeting Monday night.

Friends grew worried when the always-punctual couple failed to answer phone calls and didn't show up for appointments Tuesday.

"We're surprised if we don't see them for an hour, let alone three or four days," Tony Gibus, who works for the couple, told a local news station.

The couple, who have no children, split their time between their historic home in Atlanta and their 40-foot yacht, the Yellow Jacket, where their cat was found alone last week.

Their private plane, which Elizabeth Calvert piloted, sits on a tarmac untouched, and investigators found their Mercedes on Friday outside the Palmetto Dunes resort, a gated yacht community 4 miles from the Calverts' own.

The car yielded no clues, and divers called off a search of the marina near their yacht because of bad weather.

"We're not ruling anything out," Lt. Col. Neil Baxley of the Beaufort County Sheriff told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "We are investigating every possible scenario."
