We were discussing this topic the other day, in reference to the pair
of
jerks who abused the disabled girl in her home. Apologies by the
family
of
the alleged perpetrators. This one here strikes me more as
self-serving
IMO. An apology on one hand, alongside an effort to get the message
out
that 'he was perfectly fine before going to Iraq.'
Well, let us not discount that his service may have changed his
outlook. In fact, it probably most assuredly did. There is not much here
to base an opinion on, but the apology seems to be sincere and why
should she leave out the fact of his change if it is true, even just to
her? Even if it is an attempt to ameliorate her son's actions, who could
blame her? It's not like she went off on a rant, from what is posted
here. In fact, it seems pretty typical of what you hear, whether it be
drugs, service, or "hanging with the wrong crowd" when we hear other
parents speak. Basic human nature, it seems...

Is he still in the army/forces? Was he discharged? Dishonorable
discharge, perhaps? There's no doubt 16 months in Iraq would change
anybody, but what was he like before he went i.e. any criminal record,
juvenille. Did he enlist rather than go to jail as some do?
I'm not much of a one for all these public apologies, I don't like
them and I don't believe half of them.

You SHOULD love this one, yD. The mother is saying
that her son is GUILTY. It's going to be hard for a defense
to get around that.

Well, PSTS might be a good defense, if it applies, that's why I'd be
interested in the army record of his discharge. If he had a job that
kept him in the base, as opposed to walking the streets and IEDs, I'd
have to question the mother's claim that 'the army did it.'

I'm not talking PSTD as a defense. I'm saying that if your
mother is apologizing for what you did, she knows you did
it....and you'd better well plea bargain your ass before
your case goes to trial. The best he'll get is LWOP even
if he pleas.
Whoa tough love! It does make a change from "my boy wouldn't do
anything like that."
Poor, uneducated kids go into the Army, fight a stupid
war for the rich folks, and then come out no better than
when they went in. What happened to "The Army Builds
Men"? (And I'm not forgiving anything....it's just how
it's working today, with the cannon fodder recruits.).
My friend's son is off to iraq on Wednesday -- he's educated, yes, but
poor; he will be going as an analyst and hopefully be well back from
danger. The army used to be a good career move, but not in wartime,
and if there isn't a draft, rich kids don't enlist, if there is a
draft, there's a way out for rich kids. If McCain gets in, he might
well introduce the draft for his hundred year war!
Sorry I misunderstood. BUT if he was "a good boy" before he went to
Iraq, I still think PSTD (sydrome or disorder?) might be a good
defense. Of course, the forces have lowered their standards
considerably to get recruits.
