It's easy to say he was a hero because he tried to capture a suspect but
who asked him to do that?
Perhaps his mother, who raised him not to turn his back on injustice,

Why didn't he just mind his own business and
leave the police work to the police.
Because he felt some connection to his fellow man, unlike so many
cowards who don't care if the guy sitting at the table next to them is
beaten and stabbed so long as none of the blood spashes into their
latte or on their newspaper?
Secondly, how did the suspect know
he, the suspect, wasn't being assaulted?
Because he'd just stolen something, and was therefore by anyone's
definition, a thief?
As far as he knew, he was being
assaulted by a crazy guy in the parking lot.
After having stolen something. Doesn't sound crazy to me.
Who among us wouldn't try
to get away from such a person?
Running over him in the process?
Who wouldn't advise his children to do
the same thing?
To run over anyone who tries to stop you from getting away from a
crime?
If you're too frightened to do your duty as a citizen to uphold
civilized standards when you leave your home, try to avoid justifying
it by casting aspersions on those who aren't as timid as you are.
When your wife or mother is attacked and raped, just hope that there's
someone nearby that's crazy like that guy was, and not frightened like
yourself.
