For Tiny: Men Vs Women Fearing Walking The Streets At Night

I've often seen our friend Tiny complain that men don't face the same fears
of walking alone at night, because of our greater physical size and
strength. That we just don't get it when women discuss these fears they
deal with every day - and every night.
Here's a survey from Britain that suggests the difference is less than you
might think. How many women fear walking in their own neighborhoods at
night? Over half - 56%.
How many men fear the same thing? Over a third, at 36%. Factor in that men
on average earn more money and are less likely to be in poverty than women,
and thus live in better neighborhoods, and the gap narrows even further.
Now fear of being attacked is, obviously, different than *actually* being
attacked. But if you look up how many people in the UK or the US are the
victims of serious (felony-type) assaults, guess which gender is more often
the victim?
Speaking of fear versus reality, the same survey asked how many people had
actually been the victim of street crime. Women - 30 percent, or a little
over half the number who fear it. Men, 34 percent, or virtually the same as
the number who fear it. Now remind me again which gender has a realistic
fear of street violence?

A MASSIVE 36 per cent of men and 56 per cent of women fear walking alone at
night in their own neighbourhoods.
A survey for ITV1's Tonight programme has also shown 30 per cent of women
and 34 per cent of men have either been victims of street crime or know
someone well who has.
Three quarters of all those asked said there are not enough cops on the
streets. The study was carried out after Home Secretary Jacqui Smith
admitted that she would not feel safe walking in London alone after dark.
The figures will be revealed on a special edition of Tonight, Women In Fear,
being shown this evening at 8pm.
The programme used celebrity reporters Carol McGiffin, of TV's Loose Women,
BBC radio presenter Shelagh Fogarty, and Saira Khan, an ex-Apprentice
contestant.
They filmed on the streets of their home towns of London, Liverpool and
Nottingham on Friday and Saturday night.
On Friday, Carol was caught up in a street fight while filming in Camden,
North London.
In Liverpool, Shelagh was pelted with stones and glass bottles by a mob of
30 to 40 thugs.
The area is not far from where 11-year-old Rhys Jones was shot dead last
August.
Shelagh and her crew were forced off the streets in Liverpool the next day
when a man leaned out of a car and pointed a gun.
Saira left Nottingham reassured until her crew came across the shooting of
two young men.
