Prosecutors think LaGrone will appeal
STAFF REPORT

Prosecutors said Wednesday they expect a central Illinois man
convicted in the drowning deaths of three young children to take his
case to the state Supreme Court after losing an appeal.
Maurice LaGrone Jr. was convicted of first-degree murder for the 2003
deaths of the children of then-girlfriend Amanda Hamm.
The 4th District Appellate Court rejected his appeal Monday, but the
judges also wrote there is an argument to be made that jurors weren?t
adequately informed about the possibility of convicting LaGrone on a
lesser charge. That presents a clear issue for him to raise in further
appeals.
?So this will probably go on for a while,? said state appellate
prosecutor Ed Parkinson.
LaGrone?s defense attorney, Stuart Shiffman, did not return calls left
at his office Wednesday.
LaGrone, 32, was sentenced to life in prison in 2006 for intentionally
sinking Hamm?s car in Clinton Lake and watching as the children inside
drowned in about 4 1/2 feet of water. The victims were 6-year-old
Christopher Hamm, 3-year-old Austin Brown and 23-month-old Kyleigh
Hamm.
In separate trials, LaGrone and Hamm maintained that the car
accidentally went into the lake after LaGrone parked too close to the
water on a steep boat ramp. Hamm is serving a 10-year prison sentence
for child endangerment and could be released by the summer.
LaGrone?s lawyers had argued that the trial judge erred by letting
jurors hear about allegations of unrelated misconduct by LaGrone and
by not telling them they could consider a lesser charge, such as
involuntary manslaughter.
