Thirty-five days after declaring the San Francisco Zoo a crime scene,
police on Tuesday suspended their investigation of the Christmas Day
tiger mauling that left a 17-year-old San Jose resident dead and two
friends injured.
Police said they would resume the probe "pending new witnesses" or
"new evidence being produced" that would show the young men provoked
the attack. But so far, police have turned up no evidence to show Paul
and Kulbir Dhaliwal, the San Jose brothers injured by the Siberian
tiger named Tatiana, committed a crime at the zoo. The attack left
Carlos Sousa Jr. dead.
One legal expert called Tuesday's development a blow to the zoo, which
is under fire for having an enclosure that allowed the tiger to
escape.
At the very least, the suspension of the criminal investigation
suggests police have run out of leads and the case could play out in a
civil courtroom, said Shepard Kopp, attorney for the Dhaliwals.
"It proves what I've said all along," Kopp said. "There's nothing
new."
But the attorney for the parents of the San Jose teenager who was
killed by the 250-pound Siberian tiger suspects San Francisco police
had a different motive to suspend the probe: to prevent the young
men's lawyers from getting copies of police reports.
"We got a letter from them dated Jan. 23 that said the police
department has determined this case is still an open investigation and
that disclosure of requested documents 'may endanger successful
