The whole scenario of this murder reminds me very much of when Cary Stayner (like Hilton, also liked the wilderness) killed Joie Armstrong (correct name?).

With Joie, I believe Stayner intentionally cut her head off, and it was part of the thrill for him. Her head was found further down the stream or something. Joie was surprised by him at her cabin and killed right there in the forest near the bubbling brook. With the women Stayner targeted, he enjoyed the brutality. Since Juli's mother and the Pelosso girl weren't his intended target, they were dispatched quickly right there in the room. In hindsight, they were the lucky ones maybe? Poor Juli Sund.

when her head came off so easily, so he kinda threw it
across the river. As IF we could trust him, though.
That's the thing, can't believe anything these guys say. So often they try to mitigate the horror of what they do/did. Like, if all he did was kill her, it isn't as bad as if he deliberately beheaded her too, so he claims the latter was inadvertent hoping we won't think less of him. I do not believe he accidently cut her head off. Ted Bundy was another one who didn't want people to know what all he did with the victims & corpses.

I've been finding information that says Meredith was alive for three days after being kidnapped. Just posted a couple new articles. Check them out, especially the ones speculating as to Hilton being a serial killer, cases from years ago are cropping up.

No 'grocery money' here. :(

Like Juli Sund was kept alive after CS killed her mother and friend. But I wonder to what extent Meredith was injured during that time? There must have been a struggle on the trail, with the baton lost there. Somehow he forced her toward his vehicle, or carried her. As fit as she was, somehow he subdued her and probably had to severely injure her to get her to stop struggling? What I'm getting at, how quickly was she mortally wounded?

One thing that comes to mind is he could have used her dog in some way to manipulate her.

was she relatively unscathed until the last day of confinement? I'm thinking she was alive, but maybe only barely? And in his van the whole time, until after her death, by the sounds of it. I'm hoping she was unconscious the whole time.

I doubt she was unconscious he whole time - he isn't exactly an anestesiologist. He probably had her restrained with cuffs or rope.

You don't have to be an anesthesiologist to make somebody's brain swell. Someone can be nominally alive but in a coma for days.

I thought about the dog thing, how he may have threatened to injure her animal to manipulate her. But the dog's leash was left behind - and that baton. That baton was only lost during a fierce struggle IMO, no dog involved. I do think it may have been his idea to let both dogs off their leashes, to let them run free, as witnesses apparently reported. And when Meredith and he moved off the trail following their dogs, that's when he struck. Then he called the dogs and along they came, to his van.

I agree he probably suggested letting the dogs off the leashes so they'd run off, giving him time to do something to her without her dog right there underfoot.
