In case anyone has forgotten, 12 year olds are old enough to have
children of their own.  And some do.

They're old enough - some of them, anyway - to babysit an infant.
Change a diaper, give 'em a bottle, burp them, keep an eye on them, it
isn't rocket science.  I did it a few times at around 13 or 14, and
the kid's mother was all of 16 or 17.  That's the reality among poor
people who can't afford day care.
(snip)
The 12 year old has some serious psychological problems, most likely a
severe anti-social personality disorder that makes him unable to
empathize, and impulse control problems.  Could have some learning or
developmental problems as well - or to be blunt, he's not the sharpest
knife in the drawer.  Sentencing him as a juvenile *might* result in
him getting some treatment, and when he gets out in a dozen years or
so there's a chance he could become a taxpaying citizen.  Sentence him
as an adult and he's flushed down the drain.

Nobody here seems to comment on the underlying cause of this death - a
lack of government subsidized, widely available, decent quality day
care.  Add up the cost of the trial and imprisoning this kid - we're
talking at least hundreds of thousands of dollars.  If he's tried as
an adult and gets a life sentence, millions of dollars.

The underlying cause of this death is a mother who left her kid with
someone wholly unequipped to care for a toddler properly. She had to
have a clue that he wasn't babysitter material, but if nothing bad had
happened previously- that makes it easier to stick your fingers in
your ears and go la-la-la. If the kid has mental problems, then she's
doubly guilty. Not all 12 year olds are equal; some may be up to the
job, some not. And no one would argue, I hope, that just because some
12 year olds are physically capable of bearing children that they also
have parenting skills. They don't.

Toss in the cost of lost productivity - a lifetime's worth - from the
dead baby.  That's the cost you get when you won't provide a poor
couple with a day care that would cost taxpayers perhaps five hundred
bucks a month.  But oh, that would be socialized day care, can't have
that!  No free handouts!  Not with my tax money!  etc.

You got that right. I'd rather not pay $500 a month to multiparous
idiots who make stupid life decisions repeatedly when that money could
go to my kids, who were born of parents who waited till they were
mentally and financially ready to sprog. And I'm just all jazzed about
working my ass off for the rest of my life to prop up people who are
probably laughing at me for being dumb enough to subsidize their
stupidity.

In most European countries, the parents could have dropped the kid off
at a very cheap or free day care center.  And the day care center
would mean some extra jobs in the community, to boot.

Oh yes- and how are those 70%+ taxation rates in those wonderful Euro
nanny states affecting their economies? It doesn't take long for most
people to see that if they're going to be taken care of without any
effort, there's no point in working. Why do you think countries like
Germany welcome "guest workers"? Because those immigrants pay into the
system and have kept those pyramid schemes- excuse me, I meant benefit
programs- afloat; otherwise the shrinking tax bases wouldn't have
covered them. And if you don't have a tax base to support all these
wonderful programs, how are you going to pay for them?

Instead we leave people to fend for themselves, like something out of
a Dickens novel.  It's disgusting.  We should all be ashamed that this
baby died, because we all as a society are complicit in creating
impossible conditions for the working poor and their children.

Fend for themselves? It's not like these people were dropped on a Sao
Paulo garbage dump naked, shivering and left to their own devices.
Your nanny state already has endless government programs in place to
deal with this situation, public school being one of them. But then I
guess you'd say that we're not spennnnnding enoughhhhh,
waahhhhhhhhhhhh. You can't nanny people into responsibility any more
than you can legislate morality.

Bo, I usually like your posts, but sanctimonious twits who tell me I'm
complicit in this death because I won't freely and cheerfully let
myself be assraped for "tax money for the chyyyldrunnnnn" piss me
off.

PS - And when you go to the polls, remember that the only candidate
remotely concerned with the plight of the working poor is John
Edwards.

He's going to be the nominee, but only because Obama is an empty suit
and everyone hates Hillary.
