I was married to Sarah back in the day and also knew Mark pretty
well. They were both good people... "good-hearted" is even a bit of
an understatement. I never could have imagined something like this
happening to them. I had not spoken with her since 2005 or 2006, but
we were on good terms and I thought they were happy and things were
going well.
Obviously something very tragic happened, but like K wrote, Mark was
not a violent or evil guy. Anyone who knows Sarah knows that she's a
strong, smart, independent, and motivated person. She never would
have been with anyone who was a threat to her safety or autonomy.
I still can't believe this really happened. It's not fair.

Hello - I just wanted to say that I went to high school with both
Sarah and Mark, and knew both of them well. Sarah had a previous
marriage and then got involved with Mark - they were longtime friends
through school before getting involved and getting married several
years ago.
Both were very good-hearted people. Mark seemed to consider himself a
little bit of an outcast in school, but he was never, ever violent and
was always a great friend to those he cared about. I have very fond
memories of riding in Mark's car with other friends and listening to
music. I hadn't seen him for a few years when I ran into him in the
summer of 2004 - we played pool and caught up. I've been to his house
a few times as well.
I'd been to Sarah's house several times, too, with other friends, and
have very, very fond memories of those times as well.
This comes as a tremendous, absolute shock to all of us who knew Sarah
and Mark, and I can't even begin to understand what their families are
going through. Not in the slightest.
Just in case anyone wanted a little background.

This story is local to me. It's from the Champaign (Il)
News-Gazette. It looks like the police think the husband
started the fire and then purposely drove his SUV onto a
parked truck. A friend of mine, another teacher at Urbana
High School, was good friends with Ms. Reed. He's quite
upset about it.
I'm waiting to find out what the police/news media determine
the kind of things that might have been going on with his job,
his graduate studies, his family life, etc.
Kind regards,

Police identify family members who died
By Mary Schenk
Saturday, December 8, 2007
URBANA-Champaign County sheriff's deputies have identified three
members of an Urbana family who died Thursday night, two of whom
were thought to have been murdered, and the third in a car crash.
Found dead in the home at 408 Glenn drive, U, about 7:40 p.m.
were Sarah E. Reed, 30, and her daughter, Madeline A. Reed-Moss,
14 months old.
Ms. Reed was found dead in a bedroom of the single-story ranch
house, which had been set on fire. Madeline was found dead in
a van parked in the attached garage.
She had been strapped into a car seat, sheriff's Lt. Ed Ogle
said.
Less than 20 minutes later, Ms. Reed's husband, Mark E. Moss, 30,
was found dead in a sport utility vehicle that crashed into a parked
utility truck at a dead end of North Lincoln Avenue extended, north
of Interstate 74 in Urbana.
He had been seen by neighbors screaming outside the burning home
before speeding off in a Honda CRV.
Ogle said Mr. Moss had severe burns to his arms. It's thought
that he used gasoline to set his house on fire, Ogle said.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said autopsies conducted
Friday reveal that Mr. Moss died of multiple traumatic injuries
from the crash and that Ms. Reed died of multiple injuries to her
head, neck and chest thought to have been inflicted with an ax and
knife.
Northrup said he suspects Madeline died of carbon monoxide poisoning
but has to wait for toxicology tests.
Neither Ms. Reed nor Madeline had any burns from the fire, Northrup
said, and Madeline had no signs of external injuries.
Northrup said the couple had moved to Urbana from Crown Point, N.M.,
earlier this year.
Records from the Champaign County Supervisor of Assessments indicate
the couple bought the Glenn Drive home in the Scottswood subdivision
in May.
Mr. Moss was a graduate student at the University of Illinois in
library and information science. He had started at the UI in the
fall of 2007, according to Jeff Unger of the UI News Bureau. He
worked at the library in the chemistry department starting in
mid-August. Unger said Mr. Moss had earned a bachelor's degree
in communications and journalism from the University of New
Mexico.
Ms. Reed was an English teacher at Urbana High School.
Urbana High School students and staff were informed of her death
Friday during school, said district spokesman Mark Schultz.
"The crisis team convened once we knew about Ms. Reed's passing,"
Schultz said.
Crisis counselors were present Friday to help students, faculty and
staff and were also expected to be available today from 1 to 3 p.m.
in the Urbana High common area in the center of the school "to help
students or others who need counseling services," Schultz said.
In a press release, Principal Laura Taylor said, "We are all shocked
and deeply saddened at the death of Sarah Reed. She was an exceptional
teacher and a highly respected colleague. During this difficult time,
we, as an Urbana High School family, must unite in supporting each
other as we grieve."
Taylor was unavailable for further comment on Friday afternoon.
Ms. Reed had also taught in New Mexico. Her position teaching
English starting this school year in Urbana was her first teaching
job in the area, said Gayle Jeffries, assistant superintendent for
human resources.
Northrup said both Ms. Reed and Mr. Moss have parents living in the
St. Louis area.
Ogle said investigators spent much of Friday talking to neighbors and
co-workers of both, hoping to shed some light on what might have
triggered the events.
Firefighters from the Edge-Scott Fire department found the bodies of
Ms. Reed and her daughter and immediately turned the scene over to
sheriff's deputies. Ogle said when Sgt. Curt Apperson arrived at
the burning home, Mr. Moss was in the front yard with a neighbor.
Before Apperson could speak with him, Mr. Moss got in his sport
utility vehicle and sped off.
It was Apperson who identified him at the scene of the vehicle crash
as the same man who left the burning home.

Sarah taught at my daughter's school in Crownpoint, NM. We are very
shocked and sad to learn about this tragedy! Sarah was an excellent
teacher, very devoted, and caring to the children she taught.
Sarah also joined us many weekends to scrapbook. She was a very good
friend. I can still remember her during the pregnancy, how she glowed
with pride and love.
I am still very shocked at the events surrounding her and Madeline's
death as well as Marks. I just can not believe that there was
something going on in their lives to cause such actions.
It is just not right to lose good friends to such tragic events.
