And I get the impression it is more than Muslim men who'd like to treat women in such a way. I poked my head over to soc.men out of curiosity because it kept coming up over here. One of the threads that was recent that day had to do with a call to create an "Alpha" state where men rule and women can join, but only if they follow the rules - they cannot have education, cannot meet in groups of 5 or more, and a few other rules <eye-roll>. Sad thing is, others were jumping on the bandwagon. They sounded to me like a bunch of Muslim wannabes wrt women. I don't get it.

So, if I start a thread here about something objectionable,
and others in the group participate in it, that will affect
your opinion of the entire group and all of its participants?

No, of course not. I need much more evidence on an individual than one set of company that they keep. If I was judged solely by one of the different groups I hanged with throughout life I suspect the opinions would often be quite negative.

You have to admit, tho, the idea of Alpha State was kind of funny... if you guys do that I am gong to start my own state called Poeville (since Poland is taken), and will have all my own rules, and even an army with branches like the Clique, which will be very vicious, bloodthirsty, and led by my meanest and pretties teenage girls, so a-s.m better watch out :D

Speaking of strange lands, I rented and watched Saragossa Manuscript. What a mind ***! My husband and I agreed it was extraordinarily funny (tho we had to watch it twice to clearly follow all threads of it), and seems in the ballpark of a Picaresque novel. I never knew that genre existed, but now that I do my husband (a huge reader) informs me we have a copy of Lazarillo de Tormes, which I plan to put on my reading list.
