The back-from-dead canoeist saga has taken further remarkable twists,
with Anne Darwin failing to meet police at Heathrow Airport and her son
Mark fleeing his home in the middle of the night, leaving instructions
for his girlfriend to meet him at London City airport.

The new twists come after a remarkable week, begun when John Darwin -
declared dead in 2003 after reportedly disappearing during a canoe trip
the year before - walked into a London police station on Saturday and
declared: "I think I'm a missing person."

For the early part of the week English newspaper stories covered his
remarkable tale of survival, but when a photo showing the Darwin couple
together and happy in Panama last year the story took an entirely new
and fraudulent dimension.

Confronted with the photo in her new home of Panama yesterday, Mrs
Darwin broke down and confessed she had known her husband was not dead
for years, despite banking what British newspapers are now saying may
have been as much as £700,000 ($1.6 million).

She feared what her sons Anthony, 29, and Mark, 31, would think of their
parents, after believing their mother was a grieving widow and their
father was at the bottom of the North Sea, and said she planned to
return to England to "face the music".

But police were left waiting at Heathrow only a few hours ago, when the
flight Mrs Darwin was meant to be on from Panama, which had flown via
Madrid, failed to contain the 55-year-old doctor's receptionist.

And the same night Mrs Darwin failed to appear at Heathrow, it was
revealed her eldest son Mark had suddenly disappeared from his North
London flat, leaving a rambling notebook which reportedly contained
instructions for his girlfriend to meet him at a London airport.

The Daily Mail reported that Mark's flatmates had called police after
they woke and found he had cleared out his room in North London.

Mark had left a notebook for his girlfriend Felicity Witts which
contained messages, instructions for arranging meetings and poems.

"It's got codes on it and stuff about going to phone boxes and not
telling people your name," a flatmate told The Mail.

"It might all be perfectly innocent but the notebook is very suspicious
and the fact that he's left without telling us. I think there were
references to Panama in it.

"It had instructions on it. It was a really strange note ... like
someone writing something over and over. I'm a bit freaked out."

Cleveland Police have stressed that Mark is not suspected of a crime and
is not restricted in his movements.

It has also recently emerged that both sons had recently left their
jobs, Anthony quitting his commercial insurance post in August and Mark
leaving his job as an international property consultant the day before
his father reappeared.

The two sons also released a statement earlier yesterday, following Mrs
Darwin's confession in Panama, stating they felt they had been "the
victims in a large scam".

"Having seen the recent media speculation surrounding our parents ever
since our dad was arrested, we are very much in an angry and confused
state of mind," the statement read.

"How could our mam continue to let us believe our dad had died when he
was very much alive?

"We have not spoken to either of our parents since our dad's arrest and
we want no further contact with them.

"We have been in constant contact with the police and will be helping
them with their enquiries in any way we can."

It has also emerged that the re-opening of the investigation into
Darwin's disappearance was sparked by a colleague of Mrs Darwin who
overheard whispered calls with her husband, The Mail reported.

The colleague had contacted police after Mrs Darwin was heard talking on
the phone at the Gilesgate Medical Centre in County Durham in hushed
tones.

"The amount of calls Mrs Darwin was getting on her phone didn't raise
any suspicions at first, but while the conversations she was having were
always private, some of them were overheard," a police source told the
Mail.

"The tone of the conversations led the person that contacted the police
to believe she was talking to the man who was supposedly dead, and the
investigations basically started again from that point."

And as soon as we help the police,we're beating feet out of their
jurisdiction -- I love it.

This is going to make a good movie on LMN or WE some day. :)

Chocolic

It really is. And if the wife hadn't been overheard at work, whispering to
her dead husb on the telephone, sounds like they'd have gotten away with it.
And it isn't even over yet! Hope the news articles keep coming. The sons
must be with their mother. Where?! You think they had a contingency plan in
place?
