'Dead' Canoeist Prepares For Police Probe

The arrested 'back-from-the-dead' canoeist John Darwin has arrived at a
North East police station to face questioning.

The 57-year-old will be quizzed by officers on the suspicion of fraud
after returning to the region from where he was reported missing in
2002.

It is understood Cleveland detectives may then fly to Panama to
interview
his wife Anne.

She emigrated to the Central American country six weeks ago, after
selling
the couple's seven-bedroom home and an adjoining property for in excess
of
£450,000.

Sky sources believe Mrs Darwin yesterday confessed to knowing her
husband
was still alive, five-and-a-half years after he was reported 'dead' in a
canoe accident close to the couple's house in Seaton Carew, near
Hartlepool.

She also told a newspaper she had collected his life insurance policy
after he was declared legally dead.

Her comments followed the publishing of a photo which is believed to
show
the couple together in Panama last year.

She had previously told the British press of her shock at the news of
her
husband's 'reappearance'.

Meanwhile, a suntanned Mr Darwin was being driven by two officers to the
North East from Basingstoke, Hampshire following his arrest on Tuesday
at
the home of his son Anthony.

Last night he covered his head from waiting photographers with a
newspaper
as he arrived at Kirkleatham police station, close to Middlesbrough at
11.29pm.

It was a less-dignified arrival compared to his voluntary entrance into
a
London police station five days ago, when he declared: "I think I am a
missing person."

Then, he told police he had no recollection of the missing years.

His sons later said in a public statement their father's memory was
blank
after June 2000.

I'm thinking they got in a fight, she decided to bail out with the money
not realizing he would actually have the guts to "show up".

But the money went to the Bahamas where their photo was taken together.
The
photo was taken by some people who moved furniture for them in 2006. I
think
their plan all along was to permanently relocate to the Bahamas together,
away from the eyes of British LE, and where the "dead" husband could live
in
public, with his wife, w/o fear of being recognized. But first they had to
wait a few years to avoid suspicion.

I don't think it was a fight exactly, but it could be that he alone was
tired of the deception, and he warned her he was going to resurface
because
he couldn't take it anymore. So that's when she took the money out of the
country. And he waited until she'd sold the house etc. and had gone. I
think
they agreed on their stories ahead of time, that he'd had amnesia and she
thought he was dead. And now it's all starting to unravel, to their
horror.

That 7 bedroom house she sold - bet he lived in one of the bedrooms and
never went outside during the day etc. I wonder if they had peepholes and
so
forth, so he could hide sometimes, but was able to see his children when
they didn't know he was watching them. Creepy.
