IOW: does a parents own will to survive sometimes have a greater

It has nothing to do with cold logic, it's genetics. Programmed behavior.
Nobody stops to think "let's see, should I save my child or myself?"

I didn't understand the last part of the sentence, but parents will
usually
choose their children's survival over their own, especially as the
child (and the parent) gets older.

I suppose the words 'usually' and 'occasionally' could interchange,
although my word has less specificity, in absence of actual data.
