RALEIGH, N.C. -- Days after a Raleigh woman says she was kidnapped in a
Wal-Mart parking lot, another woman says she was taken at gunpoint.
Thursday, police arrested a suspect believed to be involved in both cases.
The first incident happened Monday on New Hope Church Road. Wednesday night,
police say a similar situation unfolded at Tower Shopping Center on New Bern
Road.
Around 9 o'clock Wednesday night, a mother and her daughter picked up dinner
in the Tower Shopping Center. As they started to drive away, a man with a
hand gun climbed from the rear of their SUV into the back seat. He told the
woman to drive to an ATM in the shopping center parking lot and ordered her
to get him cash from her account.
Police say while she was at the ATM, he hopped into the driver?s seat of her
car. She got back in the car, and he drove off-- only to return to the same
ATM and demand more money.
This time the driver took the woman and her five-year-old to another area of
the parking lot, got out of the SUV, and left.
Police were already busy investigating a similar incident. Monday, a woman
was abducted and robbed by an armed man who forced her to drive from a
Wal-Mart parking lot on New Hope Church Road to an ATM.
Raleigh Police spokesperson, Jim Sughrue, says the person behind both of
these crimes is in custody-- and facing a number of charges.
?These were very serious cases, the abduction, the robbery, the handgun
reported to be involved. All those things coming together make these very
serious cases, very high priority cases.?
Police say the victims of these cases were not at fault-- but that everyone
should always be aware of their surroundings and on guard.
Sughrue says, ?Raleigh's a very safe city, but when something like this
happens, those statistics don't seem to mean as much, because this is
something that touches us all in a very personal way.?
