MELBOURNE (Reuters) - A member of the Hell's Angels motorcycle gang
suspected of shooting dead a man and wounding two people in central
Melbourne surrendered to police on Wednesday, ending an Australia-wide
manhunt.
Christopher Wayne Hudson, 29, turned himself in at a police station north of
Melbourne after his parents made an emotional televised appeal to him to
surrender, a police spokeswoman said.
Hudson is accused of assaulting a woman outside a city nightclub on Monday
morning, then opening fire with a handgun on the woman and two passers-by
who came to her aid, before fleeing.
Hudson was a Hell's Angels member who was himself shot twice last year
during a violent brawl at a kick-boxing tournament in the Gold Coast tourist
region of Queensland state.
Media reports said his shooting was in retribution for defecting from the
rival Finks gang to the Hell's Angels.
Police said Hudson may have fled Melbourne on Monday after allegedly killing
a 43-year-old male solicitor and critically wounding two people, including a
female model he hauled from a taxi by her hair. The third man wounded was a
Dutch backpacker.
The shooting threw central Melbourne into chaos at the height of the rush
hour. Commuters fled in panic and several city blocks were sealed off as
elite police hunted for the gunman.
The incident followed an upsurge of violence between motorcycle gangs in
several major Australian cities that police believe to be linked to the
illicit drugs trade.
