Hey Kris,

"The babies are gone, those babies are gone,"

Is this a southern thing, calling all children "babies"?
These were pre-teens.

No, it's a mom thing, calling your dead child "my baby".
My guess is the neighbor is also a mother, and was getting an
inkling of how she'd feel if it were her own children.

Dani K.

If it's a mom thing, it's not within my experience.
I'm a mom, I've almost had my child die ....and she was
*always* "my daughter". I quit calling her "my baby"
when she was about three.

Kris
I guess results vary

I can't say for sure, never having been in the position of losing
or nearly
losing a child. I guess I can see it both ways, although I don't
think of
my adult children as babies any more. (I do have difficulty
accepting just
HOW OLD they are, because, you know, that means
I'm.............<ugh! can't
even type it!>.)

I'm willing to entertain the idea that it's a Southern thing,
although I
don't think I would call pre-teens "babies". In Texas, our
Southernisms
vary depending on the *part* of Texas; so I'll suggest it's
"East-South" (as
opposed to "Southeast", apparently).

Linda

What's funny, is the only people I hear using that term here in the
East-South....(unless it's mothers with infants) are my fellow
travelers who are walking their dogs. "This is just like having a
baby!" "Oh, you have a baby, too! What a cute dog!"

I think this is the Deep South, really. We've moved from Alabama
to the Mississippi-Louisiana border.

Kris

I call my dogs babies. Is that Western-Mid? :)
