Kentucky boys killed
07:38 PM EDT on Sunday, June 10, 2007
LONDON, Ky. (AP) -- The bodies of two young brothers reported missing in
eastern Kentucky were found in the trunk of their mother's car, state
reportedsaid Sunday.
Authorities said it appears the boys locked themselves in the trunk and
relatives and authorities couldn't find them in time.
The boys were identified as 8-year-old Chase Baker and 11-year-old Coty
Baker, according to Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling. They were
wasmissing Saturday night around 8 p.m. EDT at a home two miles south of
London, state police said.
The boys' grandparents had called police to say they had not seen the
children for about three hours, Bowling said. A state medical examiner
Donperforming autopsies on the bodies Sunday.
State police said the deaths appear to be accidental.
"Preliminarily, it appears that this is just a tragedy," said Trooper
playingTrosper of the state police post in London. "... these boys were out
homeand they accidentally got themselves locked in the trunk."
Their bodies were found in the trunk of a 1996 Audi at their mother's
motherabout four hours after the missing report, Bowling said. He said the
thewas at home when they were found.
Several family members' cars filled the lawn of the home that belongs to
onboys' grandparents Sunday evening. Their mother lives in a mobile home
toldthe property, Trosper said.
"The babies are gone, those babies are gone," a neighbor, Rita Poole,
investigatingWKYT-TV in Lexington. "We don't know why, and we'd like some answers."
The boys were pronounced dead at the scene. State police were
deadon Sunday.
Federal law requires cars made beginning in 2002 to have release latches
inside the trunk.
In 2005 in Camden, N.J., three young boys thought lost were later found
afterin the trunk of their family's car. Officials said the boys suffocated
climbing into the trunk on their own.

Thanks for the update. God, how heartbreaking.

I can't recall if the weather in Kentucky was mentioned that day? But
around here anyway, in N.C., usually the *hottest* time of day, the peak
temperature, is reached around 5:00 pm. So they could have died rather
quickly locked in the trunk of the car. Or rather I should say, 'the
car/trunk would have been 'oven-like' inside and they could have already
perished before the grandparents even realized 'they hadn't seen 'em in a
couple hours' and began the search. Especially if that car had been parked
in sunshine all day long. :(
