Thanks, cat,

Sherman.

Thanks cat and Sherm. I've been thinking about making my own dog food.
What are you guys doing?

td

Sophie eats a combination of Solid Gold Hundenflocken kibbles(not on the
recall list) and human food -- that is, we mix her kibs with cooked
portions of chicken, beef, pork, fish, sweet potato, squash, brocolli,
asparaus rumps -- pretty much anything that we eat except for the highly
starchy foods and the doggy-indigestible stuff like corn.

The cats eat Purina Cat Chow (crunchies) plus Whiskas fish-flavoured
canned foods as a topping or side dish, and if chicken is on our menu,
they get cooked chicken on their crunchies too. One of the cats is feral
and the other is a hunter, and we are out in a rural area, so they catch
a lot of their own meals -- barn and chicken coop rats and mice, mostly
and, alas, a few songbirds when they can.

I have been worried about this pet food recall sine it was first
announced. I think the problem went back earlier than thought and is
more widely spread than has been revealed. My daughter's 6 year old
halthy cat died os acute renal failue last year -- no known cause. We
wondered at the time if she had been poisoned. Right before the recall
notice went out, her other cat got sick and was vomiting -- but was
successfully rehydrated and recovered. Turns out, though, that my
dughter had fed that cat ONE pouch of the soon-to-be-recalled foods. The
cat didn;t like it, so my daughter didn't get her any more of that
brand, thank God.

I am seriously considering not eating any foods made in China, due to
their lack of pure food laws and their obviously endemic corporate
culture of cheating the consumer, but, as you can see by this event, the
FDA does not require listing of where the ingredients originated if a
food poduct is "assembled" in America (ditto for Canada and Europe) --
so that leaves me with few choices in ready-made food. I mean, even the
tasty imported Italian cookies i bought at the local gourmet fruit stand
(Andy's market, Hiqhway 116 between Forestville and Sebasyopol,
California) might contain Chinese Wheat Gluten!
