I spent a large portion of my childhood in the south during the
desegregation years. I was surrounded by white southerners who truly
believed that blacks, jews, and catholics should all be segregated
from "human beings", and if they insisted that they should have equal
rights and opportunies, they should be killed. Somehow I came out of
that an Equalist. Go figure.

How old are you (and of course you don't have to answer that)? If you came
of age when the rumblings of change were first being heard, that might have
given you something to latch onto. What part of the South are you from?
