TAYLORVILLE - The Taylorville woman who pleaded guilty in July to
molesting two teenage brothers was sentenced Thursday to four years in
prison, according to the Christian County state's attorney's office.
Kory Gatton, 25, was facing three to seven years in prison, or
probation, for the two Class 2 felonies.
Gatton was indicted in April on charges of aggravated criminal sexual
abuse and child abduction.
The second charge involved Gatton allegedly taking the younger boy to
Kentucky in violation of an order of protection the boys' mother had
filed against her on behalf of the woman's children.
It is State Journal-Register policy not to identify alleged victims of
sexual abuse and assault. Identifying their mother could identify the
victims.
The boys' mother told the newspaper last spring that Gatton would call
Taylorville Junior High School, where her then-14-year-old son was a
student, and tell school officials the boy was sick. Gatton and the
boy would then spend the day together.
Gatton marked on a calendar the days she had sex with the woman's
sons, then ages 14 and 16.
The mother also said then that she'd been told that, because of
Gatton's clean criminal history, she could get probation. The mother
said at the time that she'd like to see the law changed.
The mother said Thursday that she was OK with the sentence Gatton
ended up receiving.
"I would have liked longer, but I realize why she got four years," the
mother said. "I think it is a fair sentence, and I hope she gets the
help she needs."
