Med School Dean Resigns After Husband and Dog Attacked

employees or former employees? seems like it, esp. since men wore masks,
perhaps afraid husband/dog/dean would recognize them?

HOUSTON ? The first woman dean of medicine at the University of Texas
Medical Branch in Galveston has resigned for personal reasons, a university
spokesman said Friday.

The announcement follows a July incident in which Dr. Valerie Parisi's
husband was attacked outside their home by three masked men who said they
were angry with her.

Parisi, an ob-gyn who joined UTMB two years ago from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, was on a leave of absence that was supposed to last
until Oct. 1. But her resignation takes effect immediately, spokesman John
Koloen said.

Dr. Garland Anderson, the longtime chair of obstetrics and gynecology, will
continue to serve as interim dean.

Police said the men attacked her husband, Gary Strong, and the couple's dog
in July, saying that Parisi didn't know who she was dealing with. Strong was
treated for bruises and abrasions, and the poodle had broken ribs.

Parisi had been on a committee deciding how to reduce the university's work
force. About 360 employees have been laid off, and about that many have
retired or left, Koloen said.

Galveston police didn't immediately return calls for comment about the
criminal investigation.
