IIRC it was at the same time they hired a publicist (five days after
discovering the body). I find *that* much more suspicious than hiring
an attorney. It fits with one or both parents being very concious and
concerned about what people think of them, even in the middle of
dealing with their daughter's horrific murder.
In Lawrence Schiller's book, he says it was the first atty. (Bynum, or maybe
Morgan) who suggested the PR person due to the already intense media
interest swelling around the Ramseys. He suggested the firm, too, and the
Ramseys followed his advice. Pretty soon thereafter they realized what bad
advice that was and how it was only hurting their image in the public, so
they dropped the PR firm.
I think it's unfair to lump someone for following bad advice under those
kind of circumstances. If they were innocent, they'd be in the most
unimaginable emotional state and suddenly find themselves the focus of a
criminal investigation into the murder of their own daughter, they turn to
an atty. for help and advice, place their trust in his hands for proper
guidance and they assume he knows what he's talking about. They hook up w/
the PR firm he refers them to and suddenly discover this action has only
increased the cloud of suspicion around them.
