someone might want to look closer into who *HE* may be quite
pissed off at
I thought the same thing. What if this was actually a 'give me some
ideas' assignment. It would be pretty stupid, though. If someone
close to him happened to turn up dead, a student in his class would
recount at some point how they wrote about an eerily similar death
scene.
I don't think he was looking for ideas but I think that there must
be an obsessive thought about doing something like that right now --
whether or not he would actually do it isn't even the point. He's
very mad at someone about something.
Perhaps something a bit more altruistic? Maybe there was a kid (or
more) in his class that he wondered about how close they were to going
postal and hoped to get a clue and some help for the kid (kids).
He has no business doing that. If he's concerned, he should refer the kid
to the guidance counselor.
He may not have wanted another Columbine incident in his school. He
may have thought someone was ready to off a boy or girl friend.
Again -- refer to guidance IMMEDIATELY. If the teacher really was concerned
that someone was going to off someone else and he assigned a paper to
investigate, I would fire that teacher for being a total fucking idiot and
not following procedure. Can you see it? What if a teacher of your child
thought one of his students wanted to kill your child? Would you want him
to assign an essay or would you want it reported to the AP of guidance
immediately?
He
might have been worried about a parent child relationship.
Report to guidance.
He might
have had a personal worry with someone he considered having a reason,
good or bad, to have a grudge against him.
Talk to the kid.
It would be very tricky to get a kid to write such a paper honestly,
but might be useful. Even if they disguised their target, giving
reasons for the killing and methods might give an alert person a clue.
An alert person with a clue would follow procedure. If we receive a paper
(and this has happened to me) in which a child talks about suicidal or
homicidal impulses, or child abuse WE HAVE TO REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY. I sure
as hell never assign papers to investigate kids. I assign them to help the
kids learn how to write well.
Of course the teacher couldn't come up with such a public defense once
challenged.
This person should not be a teacher. He is supposed to be teaching
industrial technology and he clearly is not doing that. Furthermore, he
doesn't know when to use an object pronoun. He's a lousy teacher and his
motives are suspect. He's gotta go. I hope he doesn't have tenure.
