An accused sex fiend attacked his Queens victims after sneaking into
their homes to steal money - so he could buy video games, authorities
said yesterday.
"My parents didn't give me money or gifts," Jauan Griffith, 27, told
cops in a confession that prosecutors read yesterday in Queens Criminal
Court.
Griffith - dubbed the ponytailed rapist by cops - told police he crept
into his victims' apartments at night to show how stealthy he could be,
prosecutors said.
"I was really into my martial arts," he said, according to the
confession. "I constantly tried to make myself more stealth-like."
Griffith allegedly began the series of chilling attacks in 1995 when he
was 16 and wanted money to buy PlayStation games. He continued
attacking women until 2004, police said.
He was driving with a suspended license when he was pulled over on a
Brooklyn street Tuesday, police said.
Cops arrested and fingerprinted him and then found the prints matched
those at the scenes of several unsolved rapes, police said.
Using DNA collected from three of the rapes, prosecutors already had
indicted the alleged rapist as a "John Doe."
Griffith confessed to the rapes and two other assaults, explaining how
he sneaked through windows and walked quietly through his victims'
homes before pouncing, Assistant District Attorney Karen Migdal said.
In one attack, he allegedly covered a 43-year-old woman's face with a
pillow and ripped the phone wire out of the wall so she couldn't call
for help.
In another attack, he allegedly sexually abused a 75-year-old woman,
holding his hand over her mouth while telling her to, "Shut up," Migdal
said
"She asked God for help," he told cops. "At this point I felt uneasy.
There was no thrill in it."
Griffith, who was charged with four counts of rape, faces up to 25
years in prison if convicted. He pleaded not guilty yesterday at his
arraignment and was ordered held without bail.
