Burglars crash into pet store

A Southwest Side pet store was nearly demolished this morning when two
burglars, who erroneously thought police were on their tail, lost
control of their stolen car and crashed it into the building.
None of the fish or reptiles inside was hurt. The suspects suffered
minor injuries.
"Apparently they saw the police before [the police] saw them," said
Officer Marcel Bright. "The cops weren't even after the men until they
made the U-turn."
Before they drew the attention of police shortly before 5 a.m., the
suspects broke into a Cingular Wireless store at 4228 S. Archer Ave.
and made off with about 30 cell phones and accessories, Bright said.
When they noticed a Chicago police squad car driving behind them as
they drove off in a stolen 1999 Chevrolet Lumina, they made a U-turn,
ran a red light and crashed through the front of Tropicana Living
Things, 3879 S. Archer Ave, Bright said.
After the crash, the suspects got out of the car and ran. The two
Deering District officers from the squad car followed on foot and
captured the pair a short time later, according to Bright.
Police found the cell phone equipment in the car, which was reported
stolen out of Calumet City.
The suspects, ages 32 and 34, were listed in good condition at Mt.
Sinai Hospital, Bright said. No charges had been filed against the
suspects this afternoon.
Joe Hereau, 56, the pet store's owner, said there was extensive damage
to his building. "The roof is down, as are the front windows and front
door," he said in a telephone interview. The front of the store, where
all the retail merchandise is displayed, was "wiped out," he added,
estimating total damage at more than $100,000.
The incident occurred nearly four years to the day after a fire
ravaged his pet store, killing all his stock, Hereau said.
The store, which now specializes in custom-designed aquariums,
reopened a few months after the fire. This time, Hereau said he hopes
to reopen in 30 days. "We'll be opening a new store in [southwest
suburban] Darien in about a month, so now we'll have two stores under
construction," he said.
There was far less damage to the cellular phone store.
"They [the suspects] threw two rocks at the window and kicked the
storage room door open to get the phones," according to store manager
Andres Bahena, 31. "This store is brand new to me. This is the first
time this has happened."
Bahena said he has since gotten the phones back.
