Just saw a news broadcast on this story. A reporter hiked up to the site
where the RV was stuck. The snow was up to his belly. Very difficult
getting far. They showed all the things the family did to try to get the
attention of resuers. They put out squares of aluminum foil as
reflectors, long strings of red string or plastic leading down to the
main road, they burned some things, including perhaps a small building at
the airstrip. The family has not confirmed they are the ones who burned
it, but investigators think yes. I am thinking the family doesn't want
to admit if for liability reasons, and I can't say that I blame them.

Anyway, just wanted people to know that they were not just sitting around
doing nothing. They were trying to save themselves and doing some of the
things suggested here.

I really thought they might have done things. ANYONE would have. Then a
story was posted that they said they "read and watched TV", so I am really
confused about what was and was not done.

I will say, it is really hard to start and maintain a roaring fire in deep
snow (especially if it is windy and if it keeps snowing) it is really hard
to do. Plus, you need a SMOKEY fire to attract attention. Kris said burn a
tire, and that is a good idea - that will create black smoke. But you need
to be sure you don't burn something you may need later.

I said they should burn a spare tire. But if you're stuck, you could
burn ALL your tires. You can always get more. You can't replace
your kids' and grandkids' lives, though. Douse a tire in gasoline
and keep throwing wood on.
