Anderson denied parole
Former church secretary has been behind bars since 1985
By Ric Anderson
THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL
Lorna Anderson, the church secretary whose affair with former Emporia
minister Tom Bird sparked one of the most lurid crimes in Kansas
history, has been denied parole for a fifth time.
Colene Fischli, Kansas Parole Board administrator, said Monday that the
board had passed over Anderson for possible parole until February 2007.
Anderson, an inmate at the Topeka Correctional Facility, has been behind
bars since September 1985 on convictions for second-degree murder and
two counts of solicitation of first-degree murder stemming from the
deaths of her husband and Bird's wife.
In denying Anderson's parole, Fischli said, the parole board cited the
serious nature and circumstances of her crimes and objections to her
release. Fischli wouldn't release details about the objections or
identify who made them.
Anderson, 53, was denied parole in 1988, 1995, 1998 and 2000.
Her attorney, Tom Haney, of Topeka, said he believes Anderson has served
longer than any other person convicted of second-degree murder in Kansas
and deserves to be released. Anderson meets requirements for parole, has
passed a psychological evaluation and hasn't received a disciplinary
sanction in prison in more than 16 years, he said.
"There isn't any justifiable reason I can find for their action,'' he
said, referring to parole board members.
Haney said officials told him Anderson may be allowed to begin a
work-release program in April.
In 1995, parole board members noted that Anderson's disciplinary record
between 1988 and 1990 included guilty pleas to six violations, including
sodomy and lewd acts. No violations were recorded after 1990.
During an interview with The Topeka Capital-Journal last year, Anderson
admitted that what she did was "terribly wrong.'' She said she had
learned a "very, very valuable lesson."
Anderson's husband, Martin Anderson, was shot to death in November 1983
by a masked gunman south of Junction City. Authorities said the slaying
was committed after Anderson became romantically involved with Bird,
minister of the Emporia church where she was secretary. Lorna Anderson
told authorities her husband was killed by Bird, but Bird was acquitted
of the homicide in 1990.
The investigation into Martin Anderson's death led to a review of the
death of Bird's wife, Sandra, who had been found dead in July 1983 in
what was initially thought to be a traffic accident.
Detectives later concluded that Lorna Anderson and Tom Bird had plotted
to commit the murders. Bird was sentenced to life in prison after being
convicted in 1985 of the first-degree murder of his wife. He was
released in June 2004.
The slayings drew national attention and were the subject of a 1987 TV
miniseries, "Murder Ordained,'' and a book released in August 2000,
"Caged Bird,'' that maintains Bird was innocent.
Fischli said Lorna Anderson's next parole hearing will be held in
January 2007. Her earliest possible release date is Feb. 1, 2007, she
said.

Since Bird actually *killed* his wife and conspired to kill Lorna's husband,
I'm wondering why he was released from prison?
