Something about this doesn't sound right.
I think there's more here than meets the eye.
I'm gonna predict that in some way this was
personal, or she was involved in something.
That the perps knew her, not just from that night.

I don't agree. If she had known her attackers there would have been
more of an attempt to hide the body or destroy evidence by putting the
body in water.

Cops: Slain student may have been gang-raped

The criminal justice graduate student who was choked to death and
dumped on the side of the road in Brooklyn may have been gang-raped,
police sources said yesterday.

The 24-year-old victim, Imette St. Guillen, a dean's list student at
the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, was last seen alive early
Saturday morning.

The victim, who had come to New York from Boston to pursue her studies,
had been drinking with friends at the Pioneer Bar on the Bowery, but
decided to stay out after they left about 3 a.m., police said.

Nearly 18 hours later, at 8:43 p.m. Saturday, a 911 caller reported
finding a body on the edge of East New York.

Police found her in a weeded area at Fountain and Seaview avenues, off
the Belt Parkway.

The petite victim -- she was 5 feet, 2 inches tall -- was nude and
wrapped in a quilt, her hands and feet bound with packaging tape,
police said. Tape covered her mouth, face and entire head, police said.

DNA tests are pending, but police sources said bruises and tears in the
genital area suggest she had been raped and sodomized by more than one
person.

"It's one of the worst cases of rape we've seen," said one police
source. "She was either raped by a group or violated with objects."

The official cause of death, according to the medical examiner, is
asphyxia.

St. Guillen's Upper West Side roommates suspected something was wrong
when they woke up Saturday and she was nowhere to be found.

One friend called St. Guillen's sister Alejandra in Boston. She alerted
their mother, on vacation in Florida, then drove to New York City.

Relatives and friends who emerged from St. Guillen's West End Avenue
apartment yesterday had no comment.

John Jay officials, meanwhile, were reeling from news of St. Guillen's
death.

"It's shocking," said one professor, Joshua Freilich. "It's just
tragic. She could have done anything she wanted. She was a very serious
student."

College President Jeremy Travis said in a statement that there were "no
words to express the deep sadness and sense of loss."

St. Guillen enrolled in the graduate program in 2004, initially to
pursue a master's degree in forensic psychology. Last fall she changed
her focus to criminal justice and was due to graduate at the end of
this semester. She also volunteered in the undergraduate honors
teaching assistant program.

Freilich, an associate professor in the sociology department, said she
got an A in his class, Issues in Criminal Justice, standing out with
her sharp writing and active participation.

St. Guillen's body was found in Spring Creek Park, a remote, grassy
area long reputed to be a mob burial ground.

Staff writer Matt Friedman contributed to this report.
