An 11-year-old boy was fatally stabbed this morning apparently inside
the West Side apartment where he lived, authorities said.
The boy was found with a knife wound to his chest around 2:30 a.m. in
the 5000 block of West Washington Boulevard, Chicago police officer
Hector Alfaro said, citing a preliminary report.
The boy, identified as Clay Ether, was pronounced dead at 3:10 a.m. at
Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, according to the Cook
County medical examiner's office.
A homicide investigation is underway, Alfaro said. No one is in
custody and there were no descriptions of any assailants. Grand
Central Area detectives were investigating at the scene this morning.
Ether was a 6th-grader at Emmet Elementary School, 5500 W. Madison
St., according to Mike Vaughn, a spokesman for the Chicago Public
Schools. A crisis team will be sent to the school later today, he
said.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was notified
about the death at 5:30 a.m., but has not begun an investigation
because the circumstances of the death are unknown, said Diane
Jackson, a spokeswoman for the agency.
The boy lived with his mother and 7-year-old sister, Jackson said.
DCFS has not had any prior contact with the family.
