That meal would have been fine for his status. No abundance of fast
acting forms of sugar to potentially rob the state of its homicidal
intentions, and the fat content of the meal would have acted to slow
the lactose in the milk and ice cream down as far as absorption rate
is concerned.
<Drags up her soapbox>
The ADA is massively stupid when it makes dietary advice to American
diabetics. Advising that diabetics consume lowfat high carbohydrate
diets is bonkers. "Yes, we feel that you should consume hundreds of
grams of carbohydrates and eschew fat as much as possible so that
those carbohydrates drive your blood glucose levels up as fast as
possible. Then you can take some insulin! What, wouldn't it it be
smarter to eat a diet lower in easily bioavailable carbohydrates,
higher in fiber and higher in nonsaturated fats and maintain more
stable blood sugar levels without taking insulin or drugs if possible?
No! Hell no! Why? Well, um, well, because, well just because we
said so, that's why!"
I finally got healthy and achieved stable *normal person* blood sugar
levels with kick-ass cholesterol levels when I stopped listening to
the ADA guidelines.
<Hops back down off soapbox>

Handy guide to modern science: If it's green or wriggles, it's
biology. If it stinks, it's chemistry. If it doesn't work, it's
physics.
