RALEIGH, N.C. -- Gun-rights advocates cheered the news Thursday that a man
targeted for robbery by two teens Wednesday night turned the tables on them
by using his own gun to chase them off.
Damian Powell, 28, was headed to an apartment on Farrington Drive, off Six
Forks Road in north Raleigh, at about 8 p.m. Wednesday when two teens
approached him, police said. One of the teens flashed a gun, and they
demanded money, police said.
But Powell knocked the gun out of the teen's hand, retrieved his own gun
from his car and exchanged gunfire with the fleeing robbers, police said.
Cesar Solorzano, who was wounded in the shoulder, and Antoine Sanders, both
18, were later charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon,
police said.
Police said no charges are planned against Powell. He had a license for the
gun, but didn?t have a concealed-weapon permit, police said.
Philip Jones, general manager of Davi's Indoor Range and Shooting Sports in
north Raleigh, said the incident illustrates the need for innocent people to
be able to carry guns.
"We used to always get a bad rap -- always. But it's become more positive as
people have done exactly as the man did (Wednesday) night," said Jones, who
often carries a weapon. "I want to be prepared in the eventuality, no matter
how slight, that someone will attack my family or me. I want to be able to
respond to it."
