Laughing killers run down pleading woman

A woman pleaded for her life and her attackers laughed as she was
repeatedly run over and then crushed against a wall by a car, say
witnesses in a murder inquiry.
The reports of the brutal attack on the woman early yesterday prompted
a police search for her across Christchurch that ended when a bound
body was found dumped in the Avon River.
The body of the woman, who sources say was a sex worker, was found
partly clothed in the river yesterday afternoon, lying on its back
with the hands bound at the wrists.
Witnesses had earlier reported the vicious attack on a woman ?
described as in her 20s, of slim build, with brown shoulder-length
hair ? behind the Christchurch Squash Club in Chester Street East.
The attackers fled the scene with the woman about 12.30am yesterday
after bundling her into the white Honda hatchback they had used to run
her over at least four or five times.
Last night, police would not confirm if the killing involved a
prostitute.
Detective Senior Sergeant Tom Fitzgerald, of the Christchurch police,
said it would be "silly" to think the body found in the Avon was not
connected to the attack.
"But until the investigation continues, we can't confirm that," he
said.
"There were a number of inquiries relating to people picking up
prostitutes, but that was just one of many. It doesn't tie in with
anything at this stage. There are a number of people of interest we
need to speak to."
A post-mortem was carried out on the body last night and would be
completed today, Fitzgerald said.
A prostitute, who wished to be named only as Kimi, told The Press she
was working on Wednesday night with the woman who was later killed.
She said the woman worked as a prostitute only occasionally.
"I had been working with her for the last few days. I was supposed to
be looking after her," she said.
Kimi said that after 10pm on Wednesday the two women were working at
the Oxford Terrace-Manchester Street corner when a white Honda CRX or
Civic hatchback approached.
She said two "dangerous-looking" bald-headed men asked the woman for a
"threesome", and said they would pay afterwards.
She told the woman not to take the job as they looked "dodgy", and it
was usual to pay before, not after.
"I said, `Nah ? don't jump in'."
Kimi left the intersection for a short time after midnight.
"When I came back, she was gone," she said.
She was worried all night and could not sleep.
"I tried texting and I tried calling but it wouldn't go through," she
said.
"I don't go with people with two men ? I know that's dangerous."
A shocked Chester Street East resident said she could not believe what
had happened.
The resident, from a property next door to the squash club, said she
was scared when she heard events unfold.
"I heard a car and screaming and laughter. I could see the lights on
the car going backwards and forwards," she said.
She initially thought it was street kids making the noise, but
realised something was wrong when she heard more screams.
The laughter appeared to be that of the male attackers, she said.
She said another resident from the same block of flats saw "too much".
"They heard her getting hit by the car ... they saw her propped up
against the wall (of the squash club) and the car hit her. I heard the
smash on the concrete," she said.
The neighbours then ran out to save the victim, but the attackers had
already been disturbed and took off in the car, carrying the victim
with them.
The resident went out and saw a lot of blood in the carpark.
Fitzgerald said police were searching for two men described as
caucasian who were seen driving a white Honda two-door hatchback with
a sunroof.
Police want to hear of any sightings of the car on Wednesday night. It
had been stolen from Peterborough Street about 10.30pm.
The car had been seen travelling around the city "for some time prior
to 12.30am", he said. The car was later found burnt out near McLeans
Island, on the north-western outskirts of Christchurch, about 3.30am.
Another witness said they had seen the car being burnt from a
distance.
Fitzgerald said police also wanted to talk to anyone who may have seen
a grey station wagon in the McLeans Island area or in and around the
city about that time.
He said there was a possibility the woman was seen getting into a
vehicle (not in Chester Street) before the attack.
He said witnesses described the victim as "pleading for her life".
"They described a female being run over on at least four or five
occasions and then dragged into the rear of the vehicle and taken off
out of Chester Street on to Fitzgerald Avenue," he said.
It is not known if any other weapons were involved in the attack.
A large area around Chester Street was cordoned for most of yesterday
as police forensic teams combed the scene at the rear of the squash
club.
The wreckage of the burnt-out car was also under strict police control
as investigators searched for evidence related to the attack.
A scene guard was in place on the river last night.
