QUEBEC -- The Quebec government won't ask the Supreme Court of Canada
to have restrictions put back on Karla Homolka.

Quebec said Wednesday it won't appeal a court ruling allowing the
schoolgirl killer to go where she wants and meet with anyone she
pleases without any restrictions.

The Quebec Justice and Attorney General Department said it analyzed the
case before it decided not to appeal to the country's highest court.

''The attorney general of Quebec takes note of the decision of the
appeals court in the case of Karla Leanne Teale, and after an in-depth
analysis of the law and legal precedents, announces that it won't ask
authorization to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada,'' the
department said in a statement.

Homolka also goes by the surname Teale.

Toronto lawyer Tim Danson, who represents the families of victims
Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French, said the families believed that
taking the case to the Supreme Court was the best route.

But he said the families will pursue the matter on their own.

''Any citizen who has reasons to fear or has reasons to believe in this
case that Karla Homolka represents a threat to public safety can make
an 810.2 application,'' Danson told Montreal's CJAD radio station.

''However, it requires the consent of the (Quebec) attorney general,''
Danson said.

Such an application would be made under section 810 of the Criminal
Code. It allows a court to restrict an individual's freedom if that
person poses a danger and are considered a threat to commit violent
offences in the future.

The families believe she still poses a threat to society and they will
continue their fight, Danson added.

She was released from prison five months ago after serving her entire
12-year sentence in the manslaughter deaths of the Ontario teens in the
1990s.

Homolka is believed to be living in the Montreal area.

Quebec also noted the province's appeals court rejected a request to
appeal a lower court decision that lifted court-imposed restrictions on
Homolka's freedom.

The three appeals court judges unanimously ruled there were no legal
errors made when Quebec Superior Court Justice James Brunton struck
down the restrictions last week.
