Local police add to meth arrests

Local law enforcement officials report that Hispanic drug trafficking
organizations are flooding the local area with "Ice" methamphetamine,
the purest form of the drug.
Days after local authorities announced the shutdown of such an
organization, another person was arrested for dealing the
highly-addictive drug.
Southern Indiana Drug Task Force officers arrested Jose Angel
Gonzalez-Escobedo, 25, Wednesday in the Target Store parking lot in the
2200 block of State Street in New Albany. He faces one charge of
dealing methamphetamine, a class A felony.
According to undercover officers who could not be identified,
Gonzalez-Escobedo was attempting to sell a half pound of "ice" to
undercover officers. According to officers, "ice" is typically
manufactured in Mexico and brought to the local area and distributed to
local dealers. Officers said the resale value of the confiscated meth
is about $23,000.
Officers said they think Gonzalez-Escobedo has been selling meth in the
area for about a year and a half. However, they don't believe the
arrest is related to the trafficking organization that was recently
shut down. Police said Gonzalez-Escobedo is part of another Hispanic
meth trafficking group from the region around Portland, Ore.
"It's what's called flooding the market here," the officer said. "It's
bad. It's bad here. Ice is an overwhelming phenomenon here."
Police believe Gonzalez-Escobedo is originally from southern Mexico and
is not a U.S. citizen.
He is currently being held in the Floyd County Jail and is under
detainment by Immigration authorities for future deportation.
Officers said their recent arrest is a step in the right direction, but
said there is a long way to go before the meth problem is under
control.
"Hispanics have made it so accessible to get meth," an undercover
officer said.
Last week, Susan W. Brooks, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of
Indiana, announced the sentencing of five local people, including three
from Greenville, in what she called a major meth trafficking
organization.
Brooks said the group is responsible for bringing in about 100 pounds
of "Ice" meth to the area from Eastern Kentucky. That meth also
originated in Mexico, according to authorities.
