Yeah, I had the same thought.

The part that jumps out at me is that some of their belongings were stuffed
in a cart sitting in the parking lot next to their SUV.

Now that tells me two things:

1. He had so much crap in the vehicle he needed to clear some out for them
to lay down in the back, or even the back seat. Sounds like they were
moving or living in the vehicle. In any event, like he'd had some big break
with his wife.

2. They weren't worried about the stuff getting stolen. You put it in a
cart outside the vehicle, you have to think somebody might come along and
take whatever is there. Either he thought he would be keeping an eye on the
stuff (not planning to sleep), or he didn't care (planning suicide). The
latter makes more sense to me.

Pre-attack anoxia, I don't think he'd have gone to the trouble of removing
stuff from the vehicle, making room. Making room for a place to sleep back
there, again doesn't make sense. Making room to commit suicide, doesn't
care what happens to his stuff because he's about to be dead, that makes
sense.

He poisoned himself and the kid. Whatever it was didn't show up on the
standard tox screen. So the coroner went with an easy conclusion,
guaranteed to make the family happy (especially if there is life insurance).
Probably never realized it was going to end up in the news feeds.
