doctor of first-degree murder in the strangulation and mutilation of his

Vince Gilmer of Fletcher (North Carolina) faces a maximum of life in prison
when he is sentenced Monday in Abingdon, Virginia. The town is about 40
miles northwest of Boone in western Virginia.
A jury deliberated for less than 90 minutes yesterday before rejecting
Gilmer's insanity defense.

The 42-year-old Gilmer testified that withdrawal from an anti-depressant
made him unable to resist the impulse to kill 60-year-old Dalton Gilmer,
whom he accused of sexual abuse.

Dalton Gilmer's body was found on the side of a road near the North Carolina
line in June 2004. The day before, his son checked him out of a psychiatric
