I think that's awfully harsh. Maybe it was well known to all the kids in the
neighborhood that kids played in and around that car a lot, but that doesn't
mean the parents were all that aware of it. Maybe the kids played in the car
when the mother and father weren't looking. Kids are very capable of that
kind of thing.

It's a cliché, but as the saying goes, hindsight is always 20/20. Now that
we all know the kids were in the trunk, yeah, someone should've looked
there. And the police should've searched the whole Ramsey home, including
the entire basement, the moment they reported to the scene of a child
abducted from her bed and missing. The truth is, people can't always think
of everything, and can't always think of the right thing at a critical time.
It's like trying to make sense out of a puzzle w/ an important piece
missing. One can keeping looking and looking at the unfinished puzzle and
have no clue what the final picture is, or what the missing piece could be.
Once the piece is found and put into place, the answer seems so obvious.

Remember that family in New Zealand who were accused of murdering their
infant daughter on a camping trip when really a dingo, a wild dog, got into
the tent when their backs were turned, snatched the baby and made off with
it? I talked to a friend of mine after I saw that movie and was talking to
her about the case. I remember her saying, "Well, really, they should've had
the tent flap zipped." Well, duh! Obviously. Some people routinely zip up
the tent flap when leaving the tent, but a lot of people don't. The parents
were sitting right there, close to the tent, talking w/ friends in a relaxed
and casual atmosphere. There were people all around and the baby was
sleeping just feet away inside the tent. The last thing most people would
think of is that a dingo is going to dash into their tent w/ all these
people around and snatch an infant and make off w/ it. You can believe after
this movie came out, campers everywhere were many times more likely to zip
up their tent flap after entering or leaving the tent.

This is why laws get changed and new laws get made and LE procedures and
policies are changed and upgraded and new safety features are always being
designed and added to things like cars and machinery and furnishings and
devices around the house, etc. It's because a tragedy occurred and it taught
society what to do next time to prevent a similar tragedy recurring. You can
also bet police are going to be a lot more likely to check car trunks,
hiding places, all rooms of a house, including basements and attics, etc, as
a matter pro forma when they report to the home of a child reported missing
or abducted. That will be because of this case in Camden and because of Jon
Benet Ramsey, etc.

Life sucks that way, but it's true. You don't know until you know, and too
often the price for learning is painfully high.
