If the washer had a cut-off switch that stopped it but didn't allow it
to open, the child might still have died, depending on how much water
and/or oxygen were in the machine, and whether the child was conscious.
I admire your passion, tiny, but this is a terrible and tragic
accident. Sometimes death happens. And unless we're going to seal
every child in bubble wrap and lock them in their rooms, some of them
are going to be victims of tragedies. The question in the case of
product liability is, did it function as intended and cause injury
and/or death? In this case, it was being used as an amusement park
ride, and that's not the manufacturer's responsibility.
BTW, last night I went to our local laundromat and used a triple-loader
to wash the kids' comforters. I was able to put the coins in with the
door open, and push the coin slide in. The coins were accepted, but
the water didn't start until I slammed the door shut. Obviously, had I
walked off, the situation could have repeated itself.
