Okay, I had to know the answer so I looked it up. The birth weight
was given as 1 pound, 13 ounces = .82 kg. Merck has a chart online
for expected range of weight given gestational age for a fetus in
utero:
http://www.merck.com/mrkshared/mmanual/figures/260fig1.jsp
The news stories state the fetal age is estimated by doctors to be ~7
months, or 28 weeks. Using the chart, the baby is within the expected
appropriate weight for that gestational age. McMystery solved.

One of the reasons why 5lb has become a magic number with babies these days is because almost all car seats are rated for babies of 5lb and up, so given pretty much all babies will travel in a car seat home from the hospital, they pretty much have to keep them until they are 5lb! ...
