would highlight the British Monarchy website's interesting "micro
section" on Queen Elizabeth II's Commonwealth orders and decorations.
Of course, the image gallery include those of which she is the
soveregn, but also various other orders received from other
Commonwealth heads of state.

While the Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand awards are familiar, I
have not previously seen many of the others, including the two Maltese
decorations - Xirka Gieh ir-Repubblika and the National Order of
Merit; the Nishan-i-Ghazi of the Maldives (must be as rare as hen's
teeth); the Dominica Award of Honour; the Order of the Solomon
Islands, etc.

Perhaps the most wonderfully named is "The Order of the Golden Heart"
of Kenya.

I don't know a great deal about the Canadian system of honours, but I
must say that the system seems slightly strange. Michaëlle Jean, the
former Governor-General, was awarded The Order of Military Merit, The
Order of Merit of the Police Forces and The Canadian Forces
Decoration, without, as far as I know, being in the military or the
police.

As did Jeanne Sauvé before her, bar the Order of Military Merit.

The Canadian Governor-General is ex-officio Chancellor of all the
Canadian Orders, as are the GGs of other Commonwealth realms of their
respective orders.

As for being in the military, the Canadian Governor-General is also ex-
oficcio Colonel of such units as the Governor-General's Horse Guards,
the Governor-General's Foot Guards, the Canadian Granadier Guards,
etc. He/she also has a special uniform as Commander-in-Chief based on
the Canadian General Officer/Flag Rank uniform of the Canadian Armed
Forces.
